Three African authors have made the longlist for the International Dublin Literary Award, the world’s most valuable annual literary prize for a single work of fiction published in English.
The 141 nominations this year include thirty-nine novels in translation, spanning sixteen languages, with works by authors from forty-one countries in Africa, Europe, Asia, the United States and Canada, South America and Australia and New Zealand.
African authors on the longlist include Stay With Me by Nigerian writer Ayọ̀bámi Adébáyọ̀, What We Lose by Zinzi Clemmons, a writer raised in Philadelphia by a South African mother and an American father, and American War by Canadian–Egyptian writer Omar El Akkad.

The award, worth €100,000, is organised by Dublin City Council, with nominations being submitted by library systems in major cities throughout the world.
The book that received the most nominations this year is Exit West by Mohsin Hamid, chosen by nine libraries in Barbados, Belgium, Canada, Germany, Spain and the United States.
Last year’s winner was Irish author Mike McCormack for Solar Bones. Angolan author José Eduardo Agualusa won the 2017 edition of the award for his novel A General Theory of Oblivion.
